What Is The Real Lives Project?
Do you want to leave a record of your life? A record that can be read or viewed by your descendants or future historians? The Real Lives Project exists to give you that opportunity.
We are creating an archived database documenting the personal stories of people from all walks of life. Ordinary -Real- people who have led real lives. Our mission is to preserve a vast collection of these records for future generations. We have designed this open-access resource is designed to be a valuable tool for historians, genealogists, and anyone interested in exploring the richness of human narrative.
What Is A Real Life Record?
Your Real Life Record is a personal account of your life, captured in your own words. Ideally, it’s written by you, but if you prefer, we offer a ghostwriting service. Typically, you write up to 2,000 words and include ten pictures, though we’re flexible based on your needs.
You can document your entire life story or focus on specific chapters. Whether you choose to upload it now and update it periodically or store it for release after your passing, the decision is entirely yours.
A dedicated caseworker who will guide you through the process. Our goal is for all individual records within the Real Lives Project to remain openly accessible for generations to come. Whilst we can’t absolutely guarantee this, we are committed to doing everything possible to ensure their longevity.
Why Create A Record?
Not everyone will want to create a Real Life Record, and there are other ways to preserve memories. We explore these options in detail elsewhere and also discuss in detail why you might want to create a Real Life Record.
Your experiences, thoughts, and perspectives are valuable—they shouldn’t simply fade away. Without a written record, your legacy will remain with those who knew you, but over time, as generations pass, those personal connections will disappear. You might appear in a handful of family photos, be remembered through a few anecdotes, or feature in an old newspaper article. But your life is worth more than that. By documenting it in depth, you ensure that future generations truly understand and appreciate your journey
Your Options.
Our approach is very flexible. We want to tailor the service to your individual needs. Essentially there are three different approached to creating your Real Life Record but both approaches can be adapted to fit your specific needs.
Self Authored. You write the Record yourself. We will help with advice and editing but fundamentally it’s your Record in Your words. We prefer you to select this option as we think future generations will want to hear about you in your words, using your phrases and including your spelling mistakes! Whilst you are obviously free to do so we don’t recommend using an AI content writer- it’s not you.
Ghost Written. If you don’t want to write the record yourself we offer a ghost writing service. Our author will interview you and work with you to produce a written Record that captures your life. A Record that you are happy with.
Video Recording. You can produce a video record either instead of, or alongside a written record. The video recording can be either you speaking to camera or we can arrange for you to be professionally interviewed.
Prices for both options and various customisations are detailed here
